Why I Switched to Barefoot Shoes (and Won’t Go Back)

If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be walking miles every day in barefoot shoes, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.

But here I am, 12 months later, and I can honestly say I’ve never been more comfortable on my walks.

As a dog walker, I spend hours on my feet every day. Uneven ground, muddy fields, woodland… you name it. Having comfortable, healthy feet and a pain-free lower back aren’t just “nice to have”, they’re essential!

What Are Barefoot Shoes?

Barefoot shoes are designed to let your feet move naturally. Unlike traditional shoes, they have:

  • A wide toe box (so your toes can spread properly)

  • A thin, flexible sole (so you can feel the ground)

  • Zero drop (encouraging a more natural posture)

I first came across them through Barefoot Brit, an incredible educator on Instagram and Tik Tok. Via her platforms and her website, she explains the benefits really clearly and helped me understand how much traditional footwear can actually restrict natural movement.

Why They’re Perfect for Dog Walking

Switching to barefoot shoes has made a huge difference to my daily walks:

  • Better balance on uneven ground

  • Walking across really varied terrain feels much more stable

  • Stronger, more natural movement- my feet feel stronger and I’ve noticed much less fatigue and discomfort in my whole body, even after long days!

  • Improved posture- without a raised heel, your body naturally aligns better, which makes a big difference over time

  • Comfort all day- no rubbing, pinching or squished toes! Just comfortable, natural movement

My Go-To for Dog Walking: Xero Ridgeway Waterproof Boots

My current favourite are the Xero Women’s Ridgeway Waterproof Walking Boots.

They’ve been perfect for dog walking because:

  • Fully waterproof (essential for British weather!)

  • Lightweight but durable

  • Great grip on muddy and uneven terrain

  • Still flexible and comfortable like a true barefoot shoe

They’re practical enough for everyday work, but still look really smart too!

Where to Buy

If you’re in the UK, I’d highly recommend checking out Happy Little Soles, they have a great range of barefoot footwear and really helpful sizing advice.

Final Thoughts

Making the switch to barefoot shoes has genuinely been one of the best things I’ve done, not just for work but for everyday comfort too!

If you’re on your feet a lot (especially walking dogs!), it’s definitely worth looking into.

Just remember, transition gradually as your feet need time to adjust.
